Capital and reserves

Life-expectancy assumptions can change the size and timing of long-term obligations. That flows into how an institution thinks about reserves, economic capital and the financial resources supporting the business. LIX does not set regulatory capital or accounting reserves. It can provide an external market reference and, where exposures align, a hedging instrument that management can use alongside its existing models and rules.

Treasury and investments

Treasury teams care about funding, liquidity and how the balance sheet behaves under stress. Investment teams care about whether assets still match the risks in the liabilities. A live life-expectancy market can give both teams a current signal when expectations change, rather than relying only on periodic assumption updates.

Reinsurance and risk transfer

Institutions can also use LIX alongside reinsurance. A company may choose to retain some risk, reinsure some risk and use the market for another portion. The important change is optionality: LIX can add a capital-markets rail to the existing toolkit for managing long-duration exposure.

WHEN EXPECTATIONS MOVE

A balance sheet can respond to the market, not just the calendar.

If a pandemic or medical breakthrough changes market expectations, finance, treasury and risk teams can see the repricing immediately and decide whether their assumptions, capital, investments or hedges need to change.
